Patron's Message for 1990 Carnival

Let me say from the outset that I feel very privileged to be the number one patron of the Vic. Superules.  There are no doubt plenty of other football personalities who could have been offered the position.

Now I feel very confident it will be a wonderful carnival here in Victoria, played by the people who just love football.  It was very hard for me, after 20 years of top grade football at Footscray, to stop playing.  I suppose I could have gone on and played elsewhere, but I decided against it.  Then along came Superules and players I had played against and coached enjoyed putting the boots back on once more to enjoy the game they loved - Australia Football.

Hugh Mitchell (Essendon), John Murphy (Fitzroy), Geoff Gosper (Essendon), Kevin Murray (Fitzroy), Max James (Swans & SA) Peter Hudson (Hawthorn), Bernie Quinlan (Footscray and Fitzroy) - all these guys were great players and continue to enjoy the game.

Other state also have their former players of league clubs playing and apart from all these guys, there is the ordinary fellow who did not make it to the top level in his day.

I also would like to say "Well Done" to all players who have sponsored themselves to get here, to all coaches in charge, particularly to Kelvin Moore, as Victorian Captain and Coach, a life member of the League and also a colleague state selector, with myself.

I will be a proud moment for me to open the Carnival on 9th September at 11 am and wish all players, a lot of luck.  Just to be competing would be a big plus to them all.

There will no doubt be a lot of stories told during the carnival and at the dinner at Flemington, where prizes will be presented.  I hope to be able to tell some myself over a glass or two, and meet the real people of football.
